Nowadays, most of us spend a lot of our time in front of TV, computer, or phone screens. Prolonged exposure to these screens and sitting too close to them can result in eye strain and the degradation of our eyesight. This can also be caused by long periods of reading, writing, or watching videos without a break.
So where do the eggs come in? Turns out, eggs can aid in keeping your vision healthy and 20/20!
You blink a lot less when focusing on screens. That’s what causes eyestrain. A simple way to prevent or ease it is to remember the 20-20-20 rule.Take a 20 second break and look 20 feet away once every 20 minutes. Use a digital timer to remind you to take your breaks!
Next is to take a break by going outside. Studies have shown that spending time outside may lower the risk of nearsightedness in children and teenagers. Admittedly, more research is needed to determine whether this benefit comes from exposure to daylight or from exercising distance vision. Still, it’s good to get some fresh air and stretch your legs every once in a while!
And then, eat your eggs! Eggs are a good source of lutein and zeaxanthin, which are two carotenoids that promote eye health. Exposure to too much blue light may cause damage to the eye, and these carotenoids block the blue light emitted by gadget screens and from sunlight. These two carotenoids are also found in some vegetables such as spinach and Brussel sprouts, but the lutein found in egg yolks is much easier for the body to absorb!
